Brief profile and history:

Graduated in 1974 from Aarhus University, Denmark as a M.Sc. in Physics and minor in Computer Science. Received a PhD-degree in 1977 in physics from Aarhus University. The subject was standing X-ray waves. Until 1980 he has worked as a solid state physicist in Aarhus and at CERN, Geneva. Between 1980 and 1984, he jointed the Danish cement industry as a material scientist.

Since 1984 he has been affiliated to Aalborg university, From 1987 as an associate professor at Department of Medical Informatics and Image Analysis at Aalborg University, ( the department was renamed in 1.2.2002 to Department of Health Science and Technology (Danish: Institute for sundhedsvidenskab og teknologi ) He was elected head of department for 2*3 years (1993-99) 

From 1985 he has been working with medical knowledge based systems at department of Medical Informatics and Image Analysis, and in 1989-1990 as visiting fellow at Medical Computer Science at Stanford University, California. He is part of the medical informatics research group and was member of the ODIN team, (1992-1998) a research group that focus on methods for construction and application of model based (intentional) systems for decision support, planning and control under uncertainty. He is co-founder (1989) of HUGIN; a software company which develops software for building Bayesian network. 

From 1997 his research activity and teaching has been focused on Medical Informatics/ Health Informatics. He was project leader on two 4th framework program projects (HC-Rema and PatMan.) He has been representative for the Danish Universities at the institute board at the National  Institute for Medical Technology Assessment.  From 1999 He has served as  Danish National Representative in the European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI). He is core member of the EHR-Observatory (National funded project on Electronic Health Record started in 1998).

He has taken the initiative (1996) to form Virtual Center for Health Informatics, V-CHI, a cross disciplinary organization for research and development within health informatics. He has been  managing director of V-CHI since the start in 1996. He has taken the initiative to (2004) to establish a national network "SundhedsITnet" - a network for it-based health services and act a chairman for a scientific subgroup in this organisation.

Current research activities

Basically he pursue the idea of providing  to the individual as well as the professional in a health care situation with the right information, in the right form, at the right time, in the right place. This requires complex interaction between the technological element, the communication element and the organizational element of the health care process.

Currently (2006) His focus is on modeling and conceptual aspect of the design, development, and implementation of the Electronic Health Record. (EHR). Human computer interaction in health care systems.Partner in the EHR-Observatory project
